Starlink has officially begun its satellite-based internet service trials in Indonesia, starting in Denpasar, Bali. The pilot program, initiated on Sunday, May 20, 2024, encompasses three community health centers: two in Sumerta Kelod and Klungkung, Bali, and one in Tabarfane, Aru Islands, Maluku.

Elon Musk graced the inauguration in Denpasar, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin. The event also saw the presence of Minister of Communication and Information Technology Budi Arie Setiadi and Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.

During the ceremony, Elon Musk underscored the vital role of internet connectivity across various aspects of life, from education to healthcare. Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin emphasized that Starlink's presence will greatly aid in digitizing services at approximately 3,000 underserved community health centers lacking reliable internet access.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan mentioned Elon Musk was initially scheduled to launch Starlink alongside President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who couldn't attend the event. Luhut highlighted the critical need for Starlink in remote Indonesian regions to expand high-speed internet services, particularly beneficial for healthcare, education, and maritime sectors.

With this launch, Indonesia becomes Southeast Asia's third country to operate Starlink services, following Malaysia and the Philippines, which had prior partnerships with SpaceX.

Starlink's arrival in Indonesia is expected to deliver significant positive impacts, especially in connecting remote areas inaccessible by conventional internet providers.

Cost and Service Packages

To access Starlink internet services, customers must acquire a VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) device separately from the subscription fee.

According to Starlink.com, there are two types of VSAT devices available:

  • Fixed-location VSAT priced at Rp7,800,000.
  • Mobile VSAT for high-mobility customers, such as seafaring vessels, priced at Rp43,721,590.

Starlink offers various internet service packages in Indonesia, focusing on personal use likely to attract general consumers.

Three types of personal packages are offered: Residential, Explorer, and Vessel.

The Residential package, priced at Rp750,000 per month, is the most economical, ideal for homeowners seeking unlimited high-speed internet.

The Explorer package, starting at Rp990,000 per month, targets frequent travelers on land, such as campervan users or nomads, and those working in remote inland areas requiring high-speed internet. This package also includes a priority mobile option at Rp4,345,000 per month, providing 50 GB of data and featuring a VSAT priced at Rp43,721,590.

The Vessel package starts at Rp4,345,000 per month for 50 GB of data, offering global service for travelers or seafarers, with network priority. There's also a 1 TB data package at Rp17,160,000 per month and an Rp86,130,000 per month option.

With these diverse choices, Starlink provides internet solutions tailored to various customer needs, from household to maritime use.

Advantages and Drawbacks of Starlink

One of Starlink's main advantages is its extensive coverage. Utilizing satellites orbiting Earth, Starlink offers internet access across nearly all of Indonesia, including remote islands inaccessible to other providers, making it an appealing option for nationwide connectivity.

In addition to its broad coverage, Starlink is renowned for its high-speed internet capabilities. Designed with low-earth orbit satellites, it ensures fast and efficient connectivity, suitable for stable work operations and entertainment needs like streaming and gaming.

Another advantage is its connection stability and resilience. Utilizing space-based satellites enhances stability and minimizes disruptions compared to ground-based infrastructure, ensuring consistent and reliable performance regardless of geographic or weather conditions.

However, despite its numerous advantages, Starlink does have some drawbacks. One downside is its relatively high cost.
